Sport lover: Sophie!

Amazing, just amazing. I’m talking of course about my friend Sophie Ierodiakonou. Not only she is brilliant as a personality but her life is just amazing for so many reasons. She is a beautiful, smart young lady with a promising future (keep an eye on her 😛 ).970318_10151949206823312_614711465_n

One of the things i like about her is her passion for exercise and more precisely that she is an adrenaline junkie. She loves kitesurfing and today she is teaching us a few stuff about this exciting sport so many people practise everyday worldwide but here in Cyprus we don’t know so much. Don’t expect it’s going to be easy but when it comes to exercise the quote ‘no pain, no gain’ sums up everything! Enjoy our interview below:

Q: What is your10489868_10153025560288312_5494461428504579170_n favorite sport and how did you find out about that?

A: Kite surfing is a wind powered surface water sport using a kite and a board to move across the water. There are different styles of kiteboarding, including freestyle, freeride, downwinders, speed, course racing, wakestyle, jumping and kitesurfing in the waves. It combines aspects of wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, and gymnastics into one extreme sport. A kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite to be propelled across the water on a kiteboard similar to a wakeboard or a small surfboard, with or without footstraps or bindings. Kite boarding or kite surfing isn’t just a sport… it’s a passion and a way of life… it can forever change your life for the better of course. It can be done in nearly any location in the world, with nothing but wind and gear that can easily be packed down to the size of a golfing bag. You’ll meet the most incredible people, travel to beautiful locations and enjoy the healthiest of lifestyles. We are very lucky that we live in a country with good locations to kite surf and some of the most popular spots are in Pervolia, Mazotos, Paramali, Pissouri, Ladies Miles and so on. If we are lucky, get to have good winds during most of the year and wearing our wetsuits we can enjoy our sport even when the water is freezing.

I found out about it few years ago, when some friends of mine began to disappear whenever the wind was blowing instead of hanging out for coffee like we used to. One day I decided to go and found out what was this amazing sport that they kept talking about. And so it began!! I booked my first lesson at Kitemed Kitesurfing School and I was so excited with this sport from day one that I didn’t want to do anything else whenever the wind was blowing. It’s like a virus. You get addicted to all the adrenaline that you feel while kite surfing and it becomes your new life habit. Everything else it’s just secondary.

Q: How difficult it is and how long did it took you to learn?542001_10151447390463312_446841622_n

A: Kite surfing is not the easiest sport to learn at the beginning as it requires a coordination of all of the parts of your body. However after you are done with the lessons, they should get you going with basic skills you need and with full dedication to the sport by not missing any of the good wind sessions, you should be going upwind soon after you start. It can be difficult to schedule lessons though if the wind doesn’t oblige. Flying a trainer kite at the beginning will accelerate your learning. It is very important to get the right equipment for you as a too big or too small size of kite might decelerate your progress. That is what happened to me and it took me a couple of months to start going upwind as my kite was too big for me. Another important thing for your progress is the kitepeople at the spot. Learning to kite, puts you into a new family, the most amazing one actually. Everyone helps each other, giving tips about tricks, jumps or even for the basic stuff and are ready to rescue each other if anything goes wrong. People there, are friendly and have the same passion. During our break-time, we sit down at the spot chilling, listening to good music and having drinks with the guys. Kiteboarding is heaps of fun and very addictive. Most people I know spent their whole week waiting for their weekend kiteboarding sessions. Most people secretly want to quit their day jobs so that they have more time to kiteboard, quite a few people actually do quit their day jobs and go kiteboarding every day.

Q: What is another sport you would love to try?1604978_10152604365568312_1296617859_n

A: Another sport that I would love to learn is snowboarding. I have already been to a snowboard trip with friends and it was an amazing experience. I did my first rides there, however I would like to progress both in speed and in skills. It’s only a wintersport and therefore I am just hoping for a good snow season here in Cyprus as last year it was a disappointment. Anything that keeps the adrenaline high:)
